The grade 5 students have begun their exploration of the principles of art in their visual arts classes this year. Their very first project was an introduction to the principles and also an introduction to the CRISP theme that we are focussing on as a school. Students learned about the principles of emphasis and pattern and were each assigned one of the CRISP components – Compassion, Respect, Integrity, Servant’s Heart, or Perseverance. They were also introduced to the concept of a zentangle – a structured pattern using various lines. They practiced various patterns and had the opportunity to try making up their own.
Students began by tracing their hand. Inside the hand and in the border around the page students drew various zentangle patterns. In the centre of their hand, they wrote their assigned CRISP word. They were then instructed to use a variety of colours to colour in the various patterns and to help them pop out of the page. To finish, they wrote the Bible verse associated with their CRISP word in the background behind their hand.
The results were fantastic with students showcasing their creativity and also helping to display the CRISP theme for our school. Check out their hard work!
