Bible Curriculum
tAt Wesley, we welcome students of all faiths to attend our school. Some may already have a strong Christian upbringing. Others have never heard the Good News, and there are those who fall somewhere in between. As such, the Bible classes at Wesley are designed to introduce students to Christianity and focus on personal growth, application and understanding of faith rather than on memorizing facts and completing workbooks. Memorizing Bible verses is still a crucial part of growing one’s faith (Deuteronomy 11:18-19) but the emphasis in the classroom is on having meaningful discussions, reflections, and allowing students who are new to Christianity to develop a wider understanding of Scripture.
Starting in Grade 1, students learn about the Old Testament of the Bible with specific units on The Ten Commandments and The Lord’s Prayer (from the New Testament). They are also expected to memorize the sequence of books in the Old Testament. In Grade 2, students follow a New Testament curriculum. By the end of Grade 2, students should know the order of all the books of the Bible to help them reference various passages in any part of Scripture.
Between Grades 3-6, teachers use a comprehensive curriculum to teach Bible class. Grades 3 and 5 focus on the Old Testament, while Grades 4 and 6 study the New Testament. The curriculum includes videos, pictures, thoughtful questions for class discussions, and covers a variety of theological topics.
Our intermediate students in Grades 7-8 follow a program targeted for youth to help them hold meaningful conversations about life, faith, and purpose. Also included are Bible studies that focus on identity as a child of God and the fundamentals of our faith. Students are also asked to keep a reflection journal to capture thoughts based on class discussions, questions, and insights.
Complementing our Bible classes are weekly chapel services where students and teachers can worship together. Guest speakers from various churches or Christian organizations in our community provide messages and encouragement. Members of our student body also assist with chapel services either as part of the Chapel Leader Team or Worship Team.
