Moments That Expand Teachings in the Classroom
Trips & Special Events
At Wesley Christian Academy, the trips and special events vary from year to year but are all designed to take Wesley students in all grades to places, cultures or moments in time that encapsulate or expand the teachings in the classroom in a fun and memorable way! Here are some examples that our students have experienced in recent years.
Primary Division (Grades 1-3)
Fun trips to the local theatre and area farms to celebrate the Christmas season are examples of excursions that the Grade 1-2 students have taken. There, children use their eyes, ears, and even noses to advance their learning!
Students in Grade 3 have also visited historic areas such as Black Creek Pioneer Village, where hands-on learning is an integral part of the experience and complements their social studies curriculum about early settlers. In addition to travelling outside the school to expand upon their learning, specific programs are brought into the school. Scientists in the School has brought various hands-on learning opportunities to the classrooms at Wesley. Students in Grade 3 have the chance to learn about building stable structures through this fun and interactive program.
Junior Division (Grade 4-6)
In the Junior Division, students also enjoy trips to the local theatre or in-school visits from various partner organizations to reinforce the many topics and ideas that are taught in the classroom.
When available, students in Grade 4 take a trip to Medieval Times to complement their study of aspects of the Middle Ages as part of their social studies curriculum.
Students in Grade 5 have visited Queen’s Park to get a first-hand look at typical daily events in our provincial government. They have also visited the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and other events in our downtown core.
Our Grade 6 students have had the privilege of participating in an Indigenous Blanket Exercise at the Willowgrove Outdoor Education Centre. This powerful activity builds understanding about our shared history as Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada and effectively educates and increases empathy. Those who are also part of the Senior Band can participate in festivals such as York Region’s Music Alive! In addition, the Grade 6 students typically enjoy a day at Fair Glen as part of their outdoor education trip. It involves different activities such as high ropes, geocaching, and a voyageur/fur trader role playing exercise!
Intermediate Division (Grade 7-8)
Students in our Intermediate Division enjoy local as well as more distant offerings. Theatre performances, local music festivals (for those in Senior Band), and in-school visits from partner organizations like Scientists in the School are some of the local events in which they can participate. One impactful excursion our Grade 8 students attend is a trip to the Sarah and Chaim Neuberger Holocaust Centre in Toronto. It is a sombre and powerful experience that adds to the students’ understanding of the Holocaust and complements their study of Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl.
Our senior students also participate in overnight trips to places like Quebec City or Ottawa. This is to experience aspects of Canadian culture, learn history and practice their language skills. It is often considered one of the highlights of being at Wesley!
