Last Monday, January 27th, the grade three students had a blast exploring the Fred Varley Art Gallery. The classes had a lot of fun learning about the different art pieces on display, getting to be artists of their own, and thumb wrestling at lunch.
We started the day by learning about Impressionism from our Art Educator. The students learned that impressionist painting involves very little water and that you work from back to front. They learned about the dry brush technique and how paint strokes tell a story. They then got a chance to create an impressionist painting of their own.

Next, the Grade 3’s had a tour of the art gallery. We were so proud of how quiet and respectful our students were in the exhibit as they learned about each art piece. Part of our tour was in the gallery’s new printmaking exhibit. The students learned about printmaking, various printmaking artists, and the materials used to create these pieces.

Our final activity of the day was creating self-portrait busts out of clay. Students learned techniques like the ‘tic tac toe’ method to help the clay sculpture stay together, as well as the various tools and strategies needed in creating their own personal busts.

We are thankful to all of the staff at the Varley Art Gallery and to all our parent volunteers for making it such a memorable day.
