In the month of February, we celebrated Black History Month. An important part of this month is celebrating and sharing in the joys and accomplishments of African American men and women. Over the course of the month, the Grade 4 classes researched and learned about different individuals that have contributed to the fields of science, math and engineering. These people have played a significant role in today’s society!

We had many important discussions on perseverance, diligence, integrity, compassion and humility. Many of these men and women faced discrimination or were not recognized for their achievements until much later. However, the inequality they experienced did not stop them from achieving their goals or using their God-given talents to change the world!
To wrap up the unit, students had to write a letter to the Prime Minister to persuade him to create a national holiday for their African American person of choice and present it to the class. Students also created a poster to go along with their presentation. (Mrs. Iun even dressed up and acted as Prime Minister for a day!)

Individuals we studied included Dorothy Vaughan Johnson and Gladys West (mathematicians), Garret Morgan and Frederick McKinely Jones (engineers and scientists), Alexa Canady (neurosurgeon) and many more!
