It has been an exciting month in grade 4 music because we have started learning to play the recorder. Learning any new instrument means learning new routines. Our grade 4 students have had to learn how to set up music stands, how to sit properly for excellent air support, how to hold their instruments, how to properly blow into their instruments to produce the best sound possible, and, of course, begin to learn fingerings. It has been hard work for our grade 4 students, but they’ve also had some fun reinforcing skills with some play-along videos. One of our new class favourites is The Annoying Siren Song (sorry parents).
Many people ask me, “Why learn the recorder?” Here are a few benefits:
1. Develops fine motor skills
2. Develops hand-eye coordination
3. Improves focus and concentration
4. Teaches students to work as part of a team
5. Teaches students responsibility and accountability
6. Teaches students grit and perseverance as they learn a new skill
7. Gives students an opportunity to apply musical concepts in a real way
On a personal level, I love teaching grade 4 students recorder because you see so much progress throughout the school year. Considering our squeaky start it is always amazing to see how far they come by June!
