During the month of May, we had community helpers come in for a visit once a week for three weeks in a row! Our students were eager to listen, learn and explore what is involved with some of these professions.
Thursday, May 9th:
We had the Markham Fire Department come in. They spoke to our JK classes about fire safety and how quickly they have to be able to put on their firefighter gear to respond to a call. They also gave our JKs a tour of the fire truck. They took the time to explain what was in each section of the truck, as well as what and how the different pieces of equipment are used.
Thursday, May 16th:
Next, the Markham Paramedics visited our school. They explained that they help people who are hurt and not feeling well. They gave our JKs a tour of the ambulance and showed the students the stretcher as well as all the materials that they would use to respond to a medical emergency.
Thursday, May 23rd:
Finally, we had the York Regional Police come in for a visit. They spoke to the children about how they are here to help keep our community safe and not to be afraid when they see police. They also spoke to the children about the importance of only calling 911 when someone needs help. The children also had an opportunity to go into the police car. This was very exciting for many of the students!
We are thankful that so many community helpers came to visit our JK class and created such a positive experience for them. The children now know that these important members of our community are here to help us and keep us safe.
