Yesterday was our last House Team Day of the 2023-2024 school year. In the morning, our house team captains greeted the students as they entered the school in their team colour outfits. They also took turns to give their house team cheers after morning announcements.
However, the big activities peaked in the afternoon, when the SK to Grade 8 students gathered in the gym and sat in their respective house teams. The excitement could be felt as each class entered the room. There were smiles, hugs, and even handshakes as students admired each other’s costumes and chatted about which team might be the overall winner this year.
The afternoon assembly began with a Wesley Wildfire Sports Update. Mr. Au recounted how the Junior Ultimate Frisbee Team did at their recent tournament at Stouffville Christian School. Ms. Hoover did the same for the Senior Team. Both Wesley teams played well and finished in second place. The Encourager Medal for both the Junior and Senior Team was awarded to the same person – a student in Grade 7 – who acted as the unofficial assistant coach for both! Ms. Hoover also announced the event winners at our Junior and Senior Track and Field event. There were over 90 students who attended and many of them placed in the top 5 of their events!
After the sports update, the House Team activities began. First, each house team captain led their team in the house cheer! Next, Ms. Wong introduced the “Storybook Reading Competition”. Competitors were Grade 8 students from various house teams. Each had to do a dramatic reading of a picture book and at the end, the person (or group) who received the loudest cheers was the winner! The following book choices were made by each team:
- Adams – The Book with No Pictures – by B.J Novak
- Buchanan – The Boy Who Cried Ninja – by Alexander Latimer
- Fry – The Bad Seed – by Jory John
- Osborne – The Monster at the End of This Book – Jon Stone
Each of the Grade 8 students did an amazing job reading with great expression and energy! Aside from the occasional giggle or laugh during funny parts of a story, the gym was silent and completely mesmerized with each account. At the end, the reader from Adams was the audience’s choice!
To add to the excitement in the room, the long awaited final house team point total was revealed. As was the case all year, the battle between Osborne and Fry was the fiercest with Osborne edging out Fry by a mere 8 points!
The students then departed to various parts of the school where they met in their house teams to share some quiet reading time and good books. Older students read to younger ones and continued to share their love of reading, build friendships and house team spirit.
