Today is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Instead of our green/ blue/ white/ tartan uniforms, Wesley students and staff all wore orange shirts in support of the many residential school survivors in Canada, as well as in remembrance of our country’s shameful past.
Students have been learning about this dark period in our nation’s history, and each class has done something different to reflect and commemorate.
One of the projects that the elementary students created is currently hanging in our main ground floor hallway. It is a combination of two assignments. Some students were asked to colour feathers and work with the sentence starter “Children should feel…” Beautifully coloured feathers with words such as “special, respected, happy, they matter, and honoured” were created. These were used to create the border that framed the second assignment.
For the second project, students were asked to work in groups and asked to think about how we can support a future where every child matters? The groups responded in different ways – with pictures, prayers, one or two powerful words or a list of things.
If you have a chance to walk into the main hallway on the ground floor of Wesley, please come and have a look and see how our students are learning and growing together to make our country a safe and loving place for all of God’s Children. Every Child Matters.
