This year, we have been hosting our Reading Buddies sessions a little differently. Instead of the JK to Grade 8 students reading all together at the same time and date on a particular afternoon, Reading Buddies sessions have been scheduled at different times during a designated week. Teachers have been given the flexibility to plan this activity with their Reading Buddy partner class when it was convenient for both.
For Term 2, this exciting activity took place this week for most of the classes. A few classes will meet at a mutually convenient time next week. In most cases, students who were partnered together in Term 1 continued to read together in Term 2 in order to build on the prior relationship.
Students were asked to do more than read. They were encouraged to take turns, pause midway, and predict what would happen next. Some students asked each other how they would have handled a particular problem or situation in the story. This allowed the students to dialogue and get a sense of each other’s personality, interests or thought processes.
