This year, we are hosting our Reading Buddies sessions a little differently. Instead of the JK to Grade 8 students reading all together at the same time and date on a particular afternoon, Reading Buddies sessions will be scheduled at different times during a designated week. Teachers will be given the flexibility to plan this activity with their Reading Buddy partner class when it is convenient for both.
For Term 1, this once-a-term activity took place this week. All the classes involved ended up meeting between Tuesday and Thursday morning.
It was a great opportunity for older and younger students in the same house team to get to know each other, as they were asked to do more than read. They were encouraged to take turns, pause midway, and predict what would happen next. Some students asked each other how they would have handled a particular problem or situation in the story. This allowed the students to dialogue and get a sense of each other’s personality, interests or thought processes.
