On Tuesday, December 10th, approximately 180 elementary students put on an AMAZING performance of Straight Outta Bethlehem for over 600 members of the audience at the Toronto Christian Community Church.
The musical was a twist to the traditional Christmas story. A group of orphans helped a kind innkeeper run an inn in Bethlehem. When Joseph and Mary arrived, they found out there was no room for them. The orphans offered the stable to the couple and soon, Jesus was born. When the orphans realized that Jesus is the Messiah, even the most perky orphan (“Starr” played by one of our Grade 5 students) and the most cynical (“Blake” played by a Grade 7 student) were humbled and bowed to the King.
Even though the storyline was simple, the production was extraordinary! It was packed with cute songs “sung” by barnyard animals, disco dancing from one group of angels and hip hop moves from another. There was also an entire troupe of dancers that made use of all the aisles in the sanctuary and a short ballet feature that wowed the crowd. Last but not least, there were two choirs – Primary Choir and Senior Choir – that moved the story along with fantastic singing!
Special thanks to the directors (Ms. Wong, Mrs. Bolton, Mrs. Laird and Mr. Bailey), the choir directors (Mrs. Vant Erve, Miss Errington, and Miss Phillips) and the dance troupe instructors and choreographers (Ms. Romeo and Miss Luk) for their tremendous dedication, patience and energy!
